The power of natural selection has again shown how honey bees, in many parts of the world, have adapted to become resistant to the Varroa mite. Promoting sustainable beekeeping where the bees and not chemicals control Varroa populations is the long-term solution to the Varroa problem. The SBGMI is one such group leading the charge in the USA and sits at the forefront of sustainable beekeeping.

SBGMI sets the standard for how beekeeping organizations/clubs should be run. The resources and education offered through SBGMI encourage members to stay committed to learning new concepts and techniques in sustainable beekeeping. My honest opinion of many state and county organizations is that they are stagnant which makes it difficult to want to stay engaged with the community. When I stumbled upon the SBGMI, (I recollect it was via a YouTube recording of a ‘tips and hacks’ presentation by fellow Virginian Ryan Williamson), it was the greatest social media discovery of 2024. I was excited to discover so many like-minded individuals moving toward treatment-free beekeeping which relies on innate Varroa resistance through selective breeding.

SBGMI MISSION

A collaborative and thoughtful mission fostered through education, intelligent dialog, and practice that will carry out natural management of honeybees in Michigan and abroad utilizing scientific principles grounded in naturalist theory whilst promoting the chief end of an acaricide-free and sustainable method of beekeeping and honey making.

Our primary objective is to foster and develop regions of beekeepers focused on raising, exchanging, and utilizing local resource. The guild will focus on education, mentoring, and support of hobbyists and sideliners to propagate local sustainable survivor honeybee genetics and improved drone breeding populations that complement chemical-free and survival queen rearing practices.

Although open to beekeepers, hobbyists, sideliners, and the rest, the SBGMI primarily discourages prophylactic use of chemical treatments and defers to physical or mechanical manipulations and interventions first.

Thus, the ultimate end will result in a culture striving to increase local colony resilience to pathogens, diseases, and reduce the risk and occurrence of treatment resistance in Varroa destructor Mites and other honeybee maladies.
